2.3.1    Alginate and Calcium Chloride

Alginate is the main hydrogel used for this project. Alginate was cross-linked with Chitosan.

2.3.2    Reagents

Chitosan was the other reagent that was used to create the hydrogel that will surround the therapeutics.

2.3.3    Gelation

Filter paper, syringes, food coloring, and distilled water were the materials used in addition to the alginate and chitosan to prepare the beads. The filter paper was used to separate the alginate beads from the calcium solution. Food coloring was used as a dye (it acted in place of the antacid) and distilled water was used to make diluted solutions.

2.3.4    Glassware

50 ml and 100 ml beakers were ordered to measure the different solutions.
